Operation Dietrich was the name given to the clandestine operation mounted by high-level Nazi party members to go to the local movie theatre and have a private viewing of the movies Pittsburgh and The Spoilers, both of which featured characters played by Marlene Dietrich. It seems that Hermann Goering was a big fan of hers and wanted to initate Hitler to her charms....

Dean.

...but the operation was cancelled at the last minute when the anti-American media led by Humbert Bogartenkille caught wind of the plot from the theatre owner.. The affair ended when Petra Lorre, the wife of the theatre owner, was shot, then hung.

Actually, I have no clue at all!

nothing to do with hill 234, and earlier in 1943

If you guys want to give up let me know and I will set another question. Its more difficult than I first thought.

I have also given up...

Dean.

BTW,

Marlene Dietrich
Humbert Bogartenkille --- Humphrey Bogart
Petra Lorre --- Peter Lorre

Did anyone get it or am I just too old?

Operation Dietrich was a counter attack planned by Hitler to relieve the 6th Army at Stalingrad, turning from defeat to victory. The attack would be spearhead by SS Panzer Divisions.

The attack was planned for late February 1943, but by then it would be too late.

What was operation Marita?

During World War II, Operation Marita was the German invasion of Greece and Yugoslavia on 6 April 1941.
The Italians invaded Greece from Albania in October, 1940 but quickly got bogged down. The German troops struck from Romania and Bulgaria, outflanking the Greeks who had pushed the Italians back into their own territory. British units, transferred from north Africa (Operation Lustre) arrived too late to be of any real use.

correct, your turn:smile:

I have to admit, Reiben, that was a really good one. Just out of curiosity, what was your source for that?

Dean.

See... that is why I am such a not frequent visitor of this thread. I am so very much out of my league, that I am a little embarrassed to be here at all. I have been reading some of the questions and my score so far is: not even close to right! Keep up the good work! (Because I do learn some things :))

Thank-You again, Tomtom. I hope people like the questions I am asking. Here is one that I thought was a real doozie.

One German unit had the rather strange distinction of fighting on the Western Front and the Eastern Front on the same day. Yep, you read that right. Can you tell me what unit it was, where and when it happened, and for bonus points a la Whose Line is it Anyway, the circumstances surrounding this strange occurrance.

Dean.

(Whose Line is it anyway is a TV show that features improv comedy. The tag-line is "everything is made up and the points don't matter." Here, the points don't matter either, but you might earn the respect of people for a day or two, or until they think of something else)

This has to be a trick question as in late April early May 1945 the Russian and Western Allied lines were that close together that about 70% of the remaining German forces could have met your criteria certainly any one of Wenck's 12th army units or the Ninth army would have achieved this.
