Interesting statement.
I quess it means carriers are not currently obsolete, but will become so in some as yet defined time in the future.
They are also going to be obsolete if a carrier takes on a whole country the size of China or India by itself.

May I add, that the technology that the Chinese are fielding the U.S. have probably already fielded extremely-advanced countermeasures that aren't even disclosed to the public.
Just like in the 80's when America said that they denied that any such stealth fighter aircraft existed that could sneak under the radar to bypass enemy defences undetected and destroy targets without being seen.
They convinced congress to get a S**@load of money and pour it in producing the most technologically advanced stealth fighter today, currently outta service and replaced with B-2, F/A-22, and soon to be F-35. The F-117 perfected what it mean to be "Stealthy".
So if we are being convinced that there is absolutely no defense or Counter-measures against these so called advanced cruise missiles or
ASBMs, than we might be looking at congress making our Carriers invisible or something even better.
Point is, that just because China has something that is threatining to us
doesn't mean we have something to counter it.
It is in my humble opinion (again), that it is just some hype about the end of the Carrier Age.
Also, the Chinese I must admit do have a terminally-guided ASBM, though they wanted to delay intelligence of it being revealed to the U.S. as long as possible.
Why? So that America would have little reaction time to produce a type of countermeasure against the system.
It's been 6 years since the release of this information (to the public) and the project was being developed since I believe....1998? So if it took 5 years to develop the weapons and 6 years have passed by. Than I wonder what the U.S. have in store for these new generation ASBM.
They say we couldn't stop waves of Backfires armed with KH-15s or waves of SS-22-N Sunburns.....but now with the new systems onboard the CVNBGs they make it look like childsplays.

Well George, at least you can supply a source ( unliek some people) but my argument has never been about their invulnerability, My argument is weather or not they are obsolete. Granted a Aircraft Carrier IS a slow moving target, but at least its moving, which makes it harder to hit that a ship that is docked and moored to the pier. BUT any ship, station,. aircraft or anything else on the earth can be destroyed, but obsolete is one thing the Aircraft will NOT be until the U.S.S Enterprise ( NX-01) leaves the ISS on her maiden voyage with Capt Archer in command.
I would assume aircraft carriers will be obsolete when an operational commander looks at a display of the forces arrayed against him, notices a couple of aircraft carrier battle groups, and gives an order to ignore them.irate2:

Yet, the AC is still a superior ship. Also, I believe that battleships have been grossly underrated. The battleship is still worth a lot. What if a mega-ship is invented as a part-battleship and part Aircraft Carrier? That'll be cool, like with a platform for the aircraft and some buildings with turrets scattered around.

While some people cry the aircraft carrier is obsolete, what do they propose to provide air defense for surface units? Only a carrier can provide comprehensive air defense. Where as aegis, PAAMS, etc. are a improvement over previous air defense ships, still they do not provide the protection a carrier of any type provides.
The new ballistic missiles being used as weapons against carriers, how are they system able to lock-on to the carrier, are the Prowlers/Growlers on the decks or in the air? Are the escorts providing any EW protection? If these two groups are providing protection, putting a missile into a carrier will be damn tough.

Don't know why the debate about whether or not a ballistic missile can hit a carrier or not is even coming up. Who wants to use a ballistic missile for the purpose? Haven't you chaps been following developments. The new kid on the block, although not so new really, is the high velocity, nuclear capable, cruise missile. The current generations are supersonic, but the BrahMos joint venture expects to have the hypersonic version up and running in now less than 3 years.
Sorry, Aegis just isn't up to it anymore. America's Carrier Battle Groups are already over exposed to the supersonic versions of these systems, If America doesn't come up with practical countermeasures to super/hyper-sonic cruise missiles in the short term, you're going to be out of the picture before the paint hits the canvas and once the paint has dried, there is not likley to be anybody around capable of giving the painting a touch up.
There are practical alternatives, but rail guns are not one of them.
