They were stationed there for the duration of the war, another record.
Their early experiences of high losses, poor morale, and weak leadership, inspired the film "Twelve o'clock high".
The former airbase became RAE Bedford where a lot of VSTOL research was done and, the Buccaneer made its first flight from, among many other important developments.
