1944 - Sue Sophia Dauser, superintendent of the Navy's Nurse Corps, is the first woman in the Navy promoted to the rank of captain.
1991 - Navy A-6Es of USS Ranger's (CVA 61) Attack Squadron 155 and Marine aircraft bomb Iraqi troops fleeing Kuwait City to Basra in convoys after Iraqi President Saddam Hussein announces a withdrawal from Kuwait.

This Day in US Naval History - Feb. 27

1861 - Congress approves the construction of seven steam sloops.
1928 - A packtrain escorted by 35 Marines is ambushed by 600 Sandinastas near Bromaderos, Nicaragua. The Marines fight off the repeated attacks and are relieved the next day.
1942 - During the Battle of the Java Sea, an allied naval force attacks a Japanese invasion convoy.

1959 - USS Strong (DD 758) rescues 13 Arab fishermen from Bahrain when their fishing boats flounder in a storm.
1980 - The blue crew of USS Francis Scott Key (SSBN 657) launches four Trident I (C-4) missiles in the first C-4 operational test.

This Day in US Naval History - March 03


1776 - The first amphibious landing operation takes place. A Continental naval squadron, under Commodore Esek Hopkins, lands Sailors and Marines, commanded by Capt. Samuel Nicholas, on New Providence Island in the Bahamas. They capture urgently-needed ordnance and gunpowder.
1871 - The Navy Medical Corps is established.
1883 - Congress authorizes four modern ships of steel, "A, B, C, D Ships"; three cruisers, Atlanta, Boston and Chicago, and dispatch boat Dolphin.
1915 - The Office of Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) is established.
1915 - Congress creates the Federal Naval Reserve. Under it, the Naval Reserve Force is built up.
1960 - USS Sargo (SSN 583) returns to Hawaii from an Arctic cruise of 11,000 miles - 6,003 miles under the polar ice.

1963 - A Navy Hercules aircraft completes a 12-day rescue operation of a critically-ill Danish seaman from a Danish freighter off the coast of Antarctica.

1865 Battle of Natural Bridge, Fla. Confederate defenders stop a Union Raid on Tallahassee, leaving it to be the only Confederate State Capitol east of the Mississippi River to go uncaptured during the War.
