The History Quiz

the Winter War took place from 30 nov. 1939 to 12 march 1940

it was between Finland and the Soviet Union

the result: in a matter of fighting Finland won, 'cause Soviet Union couldn't take control of the whole land, but only some parts of it.. but as a result of the Moscow Peace Treaty Finland lost about 10% of it's land: Karelia, Salla, city of Viipuri and some islands

basically russians got their a**es kicked

Thats a pretty tough specific question heh.
Ok any hints?

Are they under Alfons Rebane? 658th Estonian Ost Battalion? 20th Estonian division?

now you are extremely close with you guessing.. try to formulate it as an answer and while you're doing that you might explain also why they were called like that

In January 1944, the 20. Estnische SS-Freiwilligen-Division began formation. The majority of the troops were drawn from the 3. Estnische SS-Freiwilligen Brigade, however elements from Ost Battalions Nr. 658, also known as Pups of Rebane (="Fox") and Nr. 659, the 287.Polizei-Füsilier-Bataillon and the returned Estonian volunteers of the Finnish army unit Infantry Regiment 200 were also absorbed into the division.

Alfons Vilhelm Robert Rebane (born June 24, 1908, in Valga, Estonia; died March 8, 1976, in Augsburg, Germany) was an Estonian military commander.

Rebane became one of Estonia's most decorated soldiers. During the war he was promoted up to SS-Standartenführer (colonel), and awarded with the Knight's Cross and the Knight's Cross with Oakleaves for extreme bravery in the battlefield.

Soldiers who fought in units under his command were often colloquially referred to as the "Fox pups" (Rebane translates to "fox" in Estonian).

sorry i was away for some time.. Missileer is correct..
wondered if that was really such a difficult question.. then i googled for "fox pups estonian army"..

Who was the only Admiral to break from the Vichy Government and join General de Gaulle's Free French movement in 1940, and which French Possessions did he liberate on Christmas eve of 1941?

Actually he was a Vice Admiral when he left the Vichy French Government. He was also famous for, according to some, devising a method of differenting between Vichy and Free France ships at sea.

WAIT it was Vice Admiral Émile Muselier....lol....
In 1940, the Vichy regime condemned Muselier in absentia to death and confiscated all of his goods. In 1941, it forfeited his French citizenship.
Under orders of General De Gaulle, he led the conquest of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon on 24 December 1941, unloading three French corvettes and a submarine cruiser coming from Halifax and installing the enseigne de vaisseau Alain Savary as Commissaire of Free France. This feat of arms earned the animosity of President Roosevelt towards General De Gaulle. De Gaulle had initially declined the suggestion of invasion made by Muselier. However, De Gaulle had desired to affirm French sovereignty after learning of Canadians and British desires for the archipelago. This finally led the admiral to resign of his post of Commissaire.

That's it. Now, do you know the second part about what he did to distinguish between Vichy and Free France ships? This idea was disputed by de Gaulle as being someone else's.

Yes I can......He did it by adopting the Cross of Lorraine for the Free French Navy but it was later used by all the Free French forces later in the war to distinguish from the Vichy French.
