eems like a perfectly appropriate name change to me, hell it is not like they changed it to HMS Tutti Fruiti.
As for not wanting to offend France, I am not sure the French would have been too concerned but given the state of the world currently it may not be a great idea to overtly try and piss off your allies.

I mean hey the German navy played the imperial march from Star wars in the Thames am I the only one who found it shocking, who knew the Germans had a sense of humour.
