Do note the phenomenon of foreign fighters to fight in these regions is not solely an ISIS one.

Many Iranian, members of the Arab states and even fighters from as far as Indonesia are known to be aiding both militia groups such as the Kurdish peoples and even moderate Sunni Tribes in Iraq.

Even in remote cases ex western soldiers from the UK and Sweden are even risking prosecution by their home countries to volunteer with forces combating ISIS.

However the long term effects of this is yet to be seen. Once upon a time this same situation was done to the Soviets, and once upon a time it did not end well...

From the information I've heard from missionary's this is right on target. Christians are persecuted in Iran. Converts from Islam to Christianity are subject to death.

I have an Iranian friend who had to flee because he converted.
He can tell some interesting stories about how the Iranian Nazi regime treats people like him.
