Alright, I'm good at editing and writing essays and persuasive letters, so I'm going to make a few suggestions, accept them or not, it's your decision..
Dear Mr. Knight,
It is my attempt to persuade you into establishing a JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) program here at our school. I am interested in this because I believe it would be a valuable learnign tool and a helpful education to many of the students here at our high school.
Here are a few reasons why I believe you would wish to accept my proposal: Junior ROTC is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline. Its focus is reflected in its mission statement, "To motivate young people to be better citizens." It prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community, and nation.
Some of the ideals of the program include:
PROMOTING PATRIOTISM
DEVELOPING INFORMED AND RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS
PROMOTING HABITS OF ORDERLINESS AND PRECISION
DEVELOPING A HIGH DEGREE OF PERSONAL HONOR, SELF-RELIANCE, INDIVIDUAL DISCIPLINE
PROMOTING AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASIC ELEMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR NATIONAL SECURITY
DEVELOPING RESPECT FOR AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEED FOR CONSTITUTED AUTHORITY
PROVIDING INFORMATION ON THE MILITARY SERVICES AS A POSSIBLE CAREER
DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL
PROVIDING AN ALTERNATIVE TO GANGS
PROMOTING HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION
PROVIDING INCENTIVE TO LIVE HEALTHY AND DRUG FREE
The program itself is funded by the Department of Defense, and all items of necessity such as uniforms and equipment such as rifles and flags. Activites included with the programs are teams such as Air-Rifle Teams, Drill Teams and many more as well as Color Guard units. I believe Color Guard could be a valuable asset to use at the beginning of football or other sporting activies.
There are many branches of JROTC such as Marine Corps (MCJROTC) or Young Marines, Naval (NJROTC) or Sea Cadets, Army (AJROTC) and AirForce (AFJROTC). I was informed the simplest way to receive one of these programs is by filling out applications to more than one program. The branch that responds fastest will be the one acceptd by the school as there is not a vast difference between any of them. However, I understand it's not that easy to even be accepted by one program.
The following are web URLs of each branch, if you are interested in finding out more:
