The first of six (possibly eight) Type 45 AAW destroyers launched today in the Clyde.

HMS Daring comes into service in 2009, and is designed to protect the fleet from air and missile attack. When it comes into operation, it will be the most powerful warship the Royal Navy has ever brought into service, with electrical propulsion and advanced missile and radar systems.

Two more of the D-class warships (Dauntless and Diamond) are currently under construction, three more are planned and rumour is that another two warships may be tendered for. Every fleet should have one.
