DURING MARINE BOOT CAMP, we were marched to an outdoor classroom for a lecture on the M-14. The instructor explained the rifle's attributes, including its capacity to fire a bullet 2300 feet per second. "Sir," one recruit said, raising his hand, "that seems kind of slow."
"Well, son," the instructor countered, "so far the Marine Corps hasn't found anyone who can run faster than that."
