Wide receiver Ashley Lelie and running back T.J. Duckett were traded yesterday in a three-team deal, but the Eagles were not one of those teams.
Lelie, who had been a holdout from the Denver Broncos' camp, was sent to the Atlanta Falcons, who sent Duckett to the Redskins.
Washington compensated Denver with a third-round draft pick.
The Eagles had expressed interest in Lelie at various times during the preseason, but a team source said before the trade yesterday that they were not in hot pursuit of the wide receiver.
Washington had been shopping for a running back since star Clinton Portis partially dislocated his shoulder in the preseason opener against Cincinnati.
The Falcons, meanwhile, were eager to land another receiver after losing Brian Finneran to a season-ending knee injury in the early days of training camp.
Lelie was the NFL's leader in yards per catch the last two seasons, but after the Broncos acquired Javon Walker from Green Bay, he held out of training camp in hopes of forcing a trade. Lelie was projected to be Denver's No. 3 receiver.
Colts. Corey Simon is likely to miss a couple of more weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee, but the Indianapolis defensive tackle was hopeful he could return for the season opener.
Simon, in his second year with the Colts after five seasons with the Eagles, hasn't practiced since banging his knee Aug. 4. The Colts' first regular-season game is Sept. 10 against the New York Giants.
Browns-Packers trade. Cleveland acquired defensive back Therrian Fontenot from Green Bay for rookie wide receiver Carlton Brewster.
In another move, Green Bay released receiver Marc Boerigter, who was signed in March as an unrestricted free agent from Kansas City for $782,780. The one-year deal contained a $90,000 signing bonus.
Steelers. Pro Bowl receiver Hines Ward sat out Pittsburgh's afternoon workout because of a strained left hamstring.
Ward missed the practice a day after returning to workouts for the first time in more than two weeks.
He left Monday's practice early when he felt a twinge in the hamstring.
Jets. The team renegotiated Curtis Martin's contract last week to cover itself in the event Martin does not play this season, the New York Daily News reported yesterday
Martin, 33, the NFL's fourth all-time leading rusher, was to make $2.5 million in base salary for 2006.
He signed a "split" contract that reduced his salary to the veteran's minimum of $810,000, the newspaper said. If he were to be placed on season-ending injured reserve, he would receive $475,000.
The running back has a bone-on-bone condition in his surgically repaired right knee and has not practiced this preseason.
Bills. Linebacker Takeo Spikes had spent so much time lobbying coaches to test his injured right leg in a preseason game, he'd almost given up on that happening.
So he was stunned when coach Dick Jauron said it was possible Spikes would play Saturday when Buffalo hosts Cleveland.
"Who said that?" a surprised Spikes said after practice. Once he heard it was Jauron, Spikes grinned and said, "Stay tuned."
Panthers. Steve Smith missed practice, this time with an ingrown toenail. Smith, who led the NFL in receiving last season, had already missed 17 days of practice.
Bears. Running back Cedric Benson has been punished by coach Lovie Smith for leaving the sidelines during Friday night's preseason win over San Diego, and for missing a mandatory postgame meeting.
Smith refused to provide any further details. Benson is battling Thomas Jones for the starting tailback job.
