The Army yesterday honored New York military personnel who gave their best on 9/11.
Secretary of the Army Pete Geren was in town to award 13 first responders - including six from the Big Apple - the Army Commendation Medal, one of the highest honors for soldiers in non-combat situations.
"On 9/11, these soldiers, when they heard the call, did what soldiers do: They ran to the sound of the gun, they ran into war," said Geren at a ceremony at 7 World Trade Center.
Spc. Charles Hernandez of the New York Army National Guard was one of the recipients.
He was on his second day as an assistant principal at the Alternative Learning Center in The Bronx when he got a call to get to Ground Zero.
"We were among the first to bring body bags down to the scene," said Hernandez, who grew up in the Alfred Smith projects, just five blocks from the horrible scene.
