Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu resigned after a series of explosions at a weapons depot near Tirana on Saturday and Sunday killed at least 16 people, injured nearly 300 and littered the region with shrapnel and live munitions. “Bearing my personal responsibility, I announce that I have handed my resignation to the prime minister,” he said. At least 10 people were still missing after the blasts, which continued for some 14 hours and damaged or destroyed more than 2,300 homes and businesses.
